After five years and eight months of a “love affair,” Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) and University of Brussels Saint-Louis have finally announced their merger! The Brussels-Wallonia Parliament approved the decree on December 14, 2022, regarding the merger of the two universities. From September 2023, the merged Louvain-la-Neuve Brussels campus will be known as “UCLouvain Saint-Louis – Brussels.”
UCLouvain currently has 35,000 students, while University of Brussels Saint-Louis has 4,000. The combined Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve will have 39,000 students.
Negotiations for the merger of the two universities began in 2016 and faced significant resistance, particularly from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Therefore, the decree carefully considered “maintaining a balance among the different players in Brussels higher education.”
The decree of the merger stipulates that the new degree authorization will be suspended for five years from the date of the merger. Specifically, the merged University of Leuven will not be able to offer a five-year master’s degree program in law in Brussels to avoid competition with the Free University of Bruxelles.
